From BibleReason.com, I had been inspired by a Bible quote which author, Fritz Chery, had used in the article, "On His robe and on His thigh He has this name written: KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS" - Revelation 19:16 - as to create an image of Jesus, decorated with a tattoo version of this Biblical quote.
To get this idea, I needed refences, and with lengthy research, I came across artists Nicolas Amiard (Graphic Artist), and Christian Rex Van Minnen (Fine Artist).
I chose to use French graphic artist, Amiard, as he had taken classical pieces by DaVinci, Caravaggio, Courbet, and had decorated them with tattooed sleeves, back pieces, facial tattoos, etc. His work, titled 'The Art of Tattoo', is relevant to my idea of 'defacing' Jesus, due to Amiard's placement of the tattoos, like how they stretch and move with the skin.
With Van Minnen, a Dutch/American fine artist, I felt his work was relevant to my ideas due to his subtle usage of Religious imagery, mixed with an "ignorant tattooing" style. Van Minnen continuously uses vibrant, disturbing imagery, which I personally enjoy, however, I will not use when depicting my version of Jesus.
I attempted to transcribe small areas from a certain piece, from each artist; for Amiard, I chose his rendition of Gustav Courbet's The Desperate Man, 1843-1845, and Unnamed, 2017 from Van Minnen. To avoid wasting time, I used Prismacolor Pencils as my choice of medium.
